The ship had a complete distinguished service record and became the inspiration for several films and stories. As I afoot researching the story, I was surprised to find that couple veterans of the Salt Socket City were still alive – and meeting for a conciliation in Alexandria Virginia in 2022. I signed up for rectitude reunion and was humbled (and delighted) to hear the legendary of Al Jowdy, Sandy Oppenheimer, and Walt Freisinger.
